Giuseppe Farina was the first ever F1 worl championship winner in 1950 driving an Alfo Romeo at 44 years of age. Ferrari had yet to establish itself as a major force in F1 and Farina's only opposition came from team mate Fangio. Farina however enjoyed better reliability, and secured the title at the Italian GP following Fangio's retirement due to mechanical problems. Farina stayed in F1 until 1955. He was killed in 1966 in a road car accident.
