Alberto Ascari was the son of another pre war F1 ace Antonio Ascari, both were to die behind the wheel of a racing car. He spent most of his F1 career driving for Ferrari, and was a close runner up to Fangio in the 1951 title race. He bounced back with a vengeance and completely dominated the 1952 and 1953 seasons taking back to back titles in the process. In 1952 Ascari won every single GP he contested in his Ferrari, a superlative feat unlikely ever to be matched. He crashed famously into the harbour at the 1955 Monaco GP and survived, but he was tragically killed during a bizarre testing accident at Monza later that year. He was only visiting the circuit where the Ferrari team were testing a sports car, he borrowed a helmet and asked if he could try the car, crashing fatally as a result of a suspected tyre failure.
