                                       Britcar Endurance Series.

This Inside Track article focuses on a club that has revived Endurance racing in the UK, and is striving to develop the category through its own 'Britcar' series. The EERC is a British based club that was conceived from an idea by James Tucker and Willie Moore when they were at the Nurburgring in Germany, this presumably explains the use of the Nurburgring circuit profile with the letters EERC on the inside, as the club's logo. The pair were keen to resurrect Endurance racing in the UK, a spectacle that had been much missed since the demise of the Willhire 24 hour race last run in 1997. James Tucker and John Veness eventually formed the European Endurance and Racing club with a 10 note found on the ground! The club organised a series of races for a class they named 'Britcar' in 2002. Nine races were organised for 2002, and a lot of hard work and promotion was rewarded by strong support and interest from the racing fraternity with over 30 cars competing by the end of the first season. In 2003 the club continued to develop, organising a 10 race season and attracting a diverse range of cars including, Mercedes 190 Evo 2, BMW M3's, Ferrari 355's, Hondas, Marcos etc. The EERC included races at the last two meetings for Sports Racing cars (Britsports) and also introduced night racing at Donington Park and Brands Hatch. The 2004 season saw the EERC grow in popularity with Britcar entries exceeding the available grid spaces and producing great racing and close battles throughout the field. Britsports attracted healthy interest with works cars from Ajec, Ariel, Chiron, Jade, Juno, and Radical. The season culminated in a spectacular night race at Brands Hatch, the first of its kind in the history of the circuit. 2005 saw the growth and interest continue, with GT cars being included in Britcar and a new series designated Production S1 for saloon and sportscars up to 3-litre capacity. The other major achievement during the season was the running of a 24 hour race at Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix. The grids were packed and the racing fast, furious and very competitive. The EERC concept was gaining in popularity, and supported by a growing army of enthusiasts and entrants. The 2006 season saw the club continue to expand its horizons, with the popularity of the three classes attracting growing numbers of competitors. The calendar included a visit to the majestic Spa Franchorchamps circuit in Belgium for a mixed Britcar and Production S1 race, and again featured a gruelling 24-hour race at Silverstone. The Britcar machinery was impressive with some great marques including Aston Martin, Mosler, Morgan, and Ferrari taking part in the action. One of the first impressions on attending a Britcar race meeting is that the participants are enthusiastic competitors who take their racing very seriously, and approach it in a highly professional manner. The cars are fast and impressive, well prepared and turned out. The atmosphere is open and friendly; something sadly missing from larger more established international series. You get the impression that although competition is fierce, the camaraderie amongst the teams is strong and that racing is still fun. It is possible to see the cars, teams and drivers up close in the pits with good opportunities for photography. If you have attended Formula 1 events, you will know how restricting it can be for spectators, and difficult to get around with large crowds in attendance, you will certainly appreciate and enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere of club racing. Britcar races are up to 2 hours in duration so you will also get plenty of time to wander around the circuits to see the cars in action from a variety of vantage points, and although the meetings attract reasonable numbers of fans, you will definitely get unobstructed views, apart from the inevitable catch fencing that is. The jewel in the EERC's crown is the annual 24hour race at Silverstone, which usually attracts top class teams such as 2006 winners Duller Motorsport, Rollcentre racing etc, in addition to the regular club members that religiously compete throughout the season. The 24-Hour race is a great spectacle and is run on the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit with ample time for fans to view the action from every possible vantagepoint. You really should make a point of attending this event, and be sure to allow time to take in the night racing, and pit action. Safety is paramount of course and officials will move you away from areas of danger, but you should still be able to get up close to soak up the pit lane action and excitement. The 2007 season sees the EERC calendar spanning eight events at seven circuits, including another visit to Spa Franchorchamps for a four hour night race, support races for Britcar at the A1 GP event at Brands Hatch on 28th and 29th April, and the established 24 hour race at Silverstone on the 8th-9th September.
